Wines of the Hvar area
Would we be able to speak about Hvar’s Plavac, that is about the Plavac from Hvar’s wine-growing hills like a recognizable wine quality if we knew that wine from Plavac is produced from Plavac Mali whose vineyards extend in a much greater area? Of course we can, because the quality of wine is given by variety, habitat, climate as well as the possibilities and production condition.
Plavac is regularly followed by a Drnekuša variety which is more acidic, rendering this Plavac more fresh, drinkable and more suitable for ageing. The fact that Hvar has a lot of sun per year is very important for the Plavac Mali as this is a variety that needs a lot of warmth and matures late. The traditional production of Plavac on Hvar is very old and widespread so over time, wines of recognizable and varied qualities have become distinctive: Plavac growing on the southern slopes of the island of Hvar, those from the sandy areas, then those from the hilly areas of the northern part of the island and finally the same variety produced from grapes from old vineyards. Quality Plavac wines are also produced in Stari Grad Plain and have an intensive red colour, with a pleasant, fresh and balanced taste.
